Please stop ruining your conference photography 📸💩

Conference photography is so important – we really need you to stop ruining it!

Last week we loaded our twitter feed and were faced with something we see all too often: truly awful conference photography taken on a phone.

‘iPhone photographers’ are ruining the months of hard work and effort it goes into producing a fantastic conference or event and the potential FOMO that could be generated with incredible photography. Don’t worry, we’re here to tell you there is a better way!

The stage looks 🔥

We don’t want to name names, but there was a tweet from a conference Twitter account praising the beautiful stage set for the conference – pretty normal right? The problem was the accompanying photography, it was butt-ugly and had a detrimental effect on how nice the stage looked.

Checking in on that account through the day we noted that the person manning the social account had remained in that seat, and was snapping away and live-tweeting the event. The stage might well look 🔥 – but we’re sorry to break it to you, your photo looks 💩!

This got us talking in the office about the relative merits of having excellent event photography versus just letting ‘the person who’s been doing the tweets take some random pictures through the day’.

The benefits of great Conference photography.

Note: we did not say ‘good conference photography’; we said ‘great’ conference photography – there is a huge difference. Properly documenting incredible events is something we pride ourselves on, therefore this is something that means a great deal to us.

How to improve your conference photography. 
  1. Understand the benefit of good event photography. Audience development for regular conferences and events is one of the biggest challenges. If you’re wanting to entice people to the next instalment of your event you need to make it look appealing. Great photography is worth its weight in gold here.
  2. Have a list of shots you want to get. Ideally, you should think through all of the different scenarios that will happen throughout your event or conference and make a plan of how you will document that. For example – do you want to get some ambience shots of your venue or your crowd? Which angles are you going to use to cover the speakers and performers at your event? Do you want to do backstage portraits of your speakers for posterity and for post-event digital content? Think it through, make a list, and don’t stop until that list is exhausted.
  3. Ensure you are using a proper camera. – your event deserves better than an iPhone. It is insane to us that after months of planning and stressful execution that you would only pay lip service to covering your event by plonking someone in the audience to take a couple of snaps from their phone.
  4. Hire a professional photographer. It’s as simple as that. The photography you get back can be used in a number of ways, and if you have a robust digital marketing strategy it will pay for itself many times over in future ticket sales and sponsor relations. We have worked in partnership with Tynesight Photographic Services for over 3 years across over 15 different events and quite frankly cannot recommend them enough.
